How this site was made

Colophon

Every good book used to end with a note about how it was made. This is ours: the type, the art, the tools, and the robots we let near it.

cat colophon.txt

Type

Chivo
Headlines and body copy. Designed by Omnibus-Type. SIL Open Font License.
VT323
The pixel type in buttons, menus, and terminals. Designed by Peter Hull. SIL Open Font License.
JetBrains Mono
The ASCII diagrams, because it actually has all the box-drawing characters. Designed by JetBrains. SIL Open Font License.

Art

Illustrations
The megaphone, the computer, the paper clip, Minnesota, and the rest of the gang are WebVolta originals, drawn by our design team.
Palette
Teal #2CFEF2 does most of the talking, with purple, pink, orange, and friends on call. Black outlines, always.

Roots

The look
The terminals, box-drawing diagrams, and ASCII portraits aren’t a costume. Our co-founder Nic started calling local BBSes around 1990 and ran his own, DARK KNiGHT BBS, from 1994 (he was 13) into the early 2000s, out on FidoNet with everyone else. This site is what happens when that kid grows up and builds AI systems for a living.
On the air
Nic is also a licensed ham, KF0WWR, working FT8 across the HF bands and building toward an over-the-air BBS of his own. 73.

Build

Code
Hand-written HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. No framework, no npm packages, and a small Node script that stitches the pages together.
Weight
63.6 KB of CSS and 17.7 KB of JavaScript, before compression. The old site shipped 4.6 MB of CSS, so we feel pretty good about this.
Content
34 blog posts and 5 case studies, every old URL still working.
Last built
2026-10-10

Ops

Hosting
GitHub Pages, deployed by GitHub Actions on every merge.
Editing
Changes start as GitHub issues. The GitHub Copilot coding agent drafts them as pull requests, every one gets a staging preview, and a human approves before anything goes live. Yes, it's the same setup we build for clients.
Analytics
Google Analytics, so we know which pages people actually read.
